Porcelain Art For The Ages!
Porcelain painting is one of the most ancient art forms - going back to the T'ang Dynasty (618-906).
A trip to our Smithsonian will show you exquisite examples of the form done in China, Japan, France, Germany and Italy. But not until 1985 was there an Exhibit of American china painters.

The above award indicates First Prize at the International Porcelain Art Show at Florence, Italy. The portrait below is the prize winner!

This exhibit became possible after Bob and Betty Kumler
spent over a year video-taping 17 outstanding porcelain artists.

They then demonstrated to the Curators that China Painting was alive and well in the US. Video tapesof 17 artists and one huge private collection can be viewed at the Archives Center.

In the late 1800's China Painting schools were setup all over the US with teachers like Aulich, Bischoff and Leykauf. Any piece of their work today would command at least four figures. Most are in private collections.

The US is now sending teachers to Europe. The

Pieces are fired many times and often to as much as 1300 or 1450 degrees Fahrenheit to obtain translucency found only in this medium.
